Both Piet Schenkelaars from Schenkelaars Biotechnology and Huib de Vriend from LIS Consult, together with other experts from the UK and Austria, are currently involved in an evaluation of the EU legislative framework in the field of cultivation of GMOs under Directive 2001/18/EC and Regulation (EC) N° 1829/2003, and marketing of uses other than cultivation under Directive 2001/18/EC.

This technical evaluation has recently been launched by DG Environment of the European Commission. The aim is to assess the extent to which the implementation of the legislative framework on the cultivation and marketing of GMOs has achieved the objective of protecting human and animal health, the environment and consumers' interest, while at the same time ensuring the functioning of the internal market.

This  work is being carried out by GHK Consulting Ltd, which operates under the European Policy Evaluation Consortium (EPEC). GHK is supported by Technopolis and by a group of experts. The evaluation will be completed by the beginning of 2010.
